For her 30th birthday, the virginal Amanda Briars has promised herself the ultimate gift: A night of bed-creaking, deflowering passion. But this aspiring writer in London is in for a big surprise when she discovers that Jack, the late-night visitor she assumed to be the “hired help,” is actually a giant of the London publishing industry.   Provided to YouTube by The Orchard Enterprises The Cries of London Orlando Gibbons August Wenzinger The Deller Consort Schola Cantorum Basiliensis Anthems, Madrigals and .

In fact, I enjoyed reading the different “Cries of London” texts on their own more than I did hearing their musical settings, although, unusually for Hillier’s projects, the rather obscure, self-absorbed, even arcane liner notes are not much help in understanding the music’s context and content.   The cries of London have ever been very popular, whether as broadsides, books, ballads, or engravings. Artists of all countries and times have delighted to represent those peculiarities of costume and character which belong to the history of street-cries, and the criers thereof.

The earliest known London street hawkers’ shouts were published in the form of broadsides in the late sixteenth century, presumably for the amusement of men, as the few extant examples contain bawdy.

Among the very first Cries to be credited to an individual artist, Laroon’s “Cryes of the City of London Drawne after the Life” were on a larger scale than had been attempted before, which allowed for more sophisticated use of composition and greater detail in costume. For the first time, hawkers were portrayed as individuals not merely.
